Pilots how did you do it?

Well i'm currently a 16 year old student studying for my GCSEs in the UK. My ambition is to become an airline pilot like many other young people in this world. When i was younger i believed that becoming an airline pilot was a simple process, get good grades, flying lessons and then that coveted Airline Job. However as you read this i bet you will laugh at my profound ignorance at the concept, which i totally accept as it was my delusion. When i turned 16 in December i was given a trial flight lesson which i thoroughly enjoyed. It made me even more hungry for a career in the airline business. This was all well until i discovered the burden of debt which i will undoubtedly have to carry on my shoulders. Reality has sunk in early for me which i guess is a good thing as i can now start making some realistic and mature decisions about my life. I am no where near ignorant enough now to believe that this is an easy career choice so i therefore ask this question to anyone here who can share their experiences with me. Pilots, how did you become the Airline Pilots today and what route did you take to become one, eg Sponsorship, RAF or anyway else. And also how did you financially fund yourself to achieve your ambitions? I understand that many young people want to become pilots, but i'm not sure if there aware of the trouble it may cause mentally or later in life. If anyone has any good advice i'm totally willing to take it on board even if the advice is discouraging because i am (hopefully) not an arrogant or ignorant person. I thank you for reading this post and look forward to the replies.
