How do you keep from having some sort of mental breakdown, while being unemployed for a long time?

I've been out of work for a year and a half now as of this month. I feel sometimes as if I want to cry and have a mental breakdown. I'm an out of work automotive quality engineer. I actually use Yahoo Answers as a sort of therapy. I do have some help, but I have two cats to care for and it pains me to watch them share in this situation. I just want my life back.

Keep looking for work and volunteer in the meantime. You need to stay connected with service. By staying home and collecting unemployment, you are creating a "lack of self worth mentality". Stay Busy! PS I wouldn't rush into anti-dep meds like the above answer suggests.

Volunteer! You will have a purpose until you find paid employment again. Also, there are a lot of really interesting voluntary jobs available, and there is so much choice. AND it looks good on your cv.

Allow yourself to cry when you want and as much as you want. This is a tough situation to be in and for so long. This situation can feel especially difficult for men since society puts so much pressure on them in terms of their "roles" and all of the different stereotypes that are impossible to live up to. However... More
