After you pay a bill that has been in collections how long does it take for it to come off your credit report?

I have some medical bills in collections right now and I was wondering how long they stay on my credit report after I pay them. I also lost my job and I am behind on my credit card. If I pay it off when I get my taxes done when will that come off. And also will it always say that I was behind?

Negative reports stay on your credit report for 7 years whether paid off or not and correctly reported negatives cannot be magically removed. However it does look better if you ask the creditor to notate your credit report item as paid (get it in writing before you pay them off).

Paid old debt looks... More
