What is the purpose of space exploration?

Hey guys, i wanna know what you guys think about the purpose of space exploration. Consider the expenses, the risks to human life, technologies developed, jobs that are created, and the knowledge gained from our missions. Do you think the costs and hazards are worth the benefits?

We are curious. We want to know what is out there. the earth is just a spec on the map of the universe(if there was one). There is so much out there, that it's impossible to count. I think that we spend an enormous amount of time and money, yet there is no oxygen, so how are we going to sustain life on it? And how would we get building materials up there. I just can't see what the benefit is in return for all the money that is and has been spent.

Yes. Its like asking whether or not crossing the ocean was worth the risk. The potential knowledge and technology gained through space exploration are immense. Plus I hope that eventually we'll hit a point where we are no longer such a terror of a civilization, at which point we could potentially be a good influence... More

In the words of the great Dr. Carl Sagan, "our future depends powerfully on how well we understand this cosmos". Without space exploration, we would know very little about what lays outside of this blue planet we inhabit.
