How did soldiers in WW II receive their weapons?
I've been watching HBO's The Pacific, and Marines in the same squad will have over half a dozen separate kinds of weapons, from M1s, Springfields, M1911s, revolvers, Thompsons, etc. What Im wondering is, were Soldiers and Marines in WW II given weapons at random, because of what the rest of their unit was given, what they showed the most skill in at basic training, or rank? I know special weapons like heavy machine guns and flamethrowers are special cases, but what about standard weapons?
