What is a Dental Hygienist and why should my cleaning be done by them?

My Dentist is recommending that I be seen by a Dental Hygienist for my cleans now instead of a Dentist. Why would that be?

A dental hygeinist cleans teeth only! That is what they go to school for. Usually dentists will hire dental hygeinists to clean teeth which allows the dentist to increase production. Instead of wasting the dentists time cleaning teeth, he/she will have a hygeinist do that while he/she does a root canal or crown.
