What exactly is engineering?

I don't know what it is, I always imagine it as being mechanical, but I don't know what it is, what is it?

Engineering is tackling problems with design solutions.. so a material engineer will develop new materials to suite a purpose. This is a simple rule of what mechanical engineer does in the most simple terms. Civil engineers build targets while Mechanical engineers destroy those targets. and well industrial are not really engineers and electrical engineers are unreal.
