Is it considered a conflict of interest to do two different jobs for two different firms in the same field?

For example, suppose I am employed at a certain company to fill a certain position in a certain industry. Could I simultaneously be legally employed at another company to fill another position in the same industry? Would that be considered a conflict of interest? No, not a lawyer. I don't have a whole lot of specific information at this point, I just was interested to know if this would even be worth pursuing. If it's company policy, then I can investigate further. If it's illegal, then I won't waste my time on it.
