Because of our lousy job situation here, it would likely be best to move to Burbank until your husband finds a job, there is likely a lot of competition for jobs in his field. Burbank has some relatively reasonable apartment rents (for LA, still expensive), it's safe, has some pretty neighborhoods, kinda boring, which isn't necessarily bad, and easy freeway access.
Toluca Lake is nice, close to Burbank, generally not as safe (but fine if you're careful, like most of LA) but a bit less boring. If you're sure your husband will find a job soon, than there is temporary housing at Oakwood Toluca Hills, which is right near the border of Toluca Lake, Burbank and Hollywood Hills, right by Warner Bros and Universal. The prices aren't that bad for their unfurnished units and they have flexible leasing options.

If your husband did get a job in the Santa Monica Mountains, it would depend where, but Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Hidden Hills, Woodland Hills, Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village might be good options, they're close to the 101 Freeway. (The 101/134 goes from Ventura to Burbank.) However, if one of you can leave earlier in the morning (before rush hour) than it might be better to live a bit closer to the other's job. Traffic can be really bad. From Burbank it could be 40+ miles to the Santa Monica Mountains (depending on the location, they stretch from Hollywood Hills to Ventura), and about 60 miles to Ventura (Channel Islands). Traffic out/from to Ventura generally gets worse toward the end of the week and drive time can really be extended.
