Where should I live to be a makeup artist?

If I have to move to either Los Angeles or New York, I would prefer L.A. Currently I live in St. Louis where my family and friends are. Is it possible just to still live in St. Louis and travel back in forth to all around the world. Will clients paid travel fees or will I have to cover most. I want makeup to make me living, I don't want a day job. I am thinking of attending MUD makeup school in Burbank, CA. Would moving be better and how hard is it to get work in LA as makeup artist.
