Culturally Speaking: How would you adjust to moving to a new city alone, how would you build on social life?

Say you are single, have a job offer in a new city like lets say Miami or Atlanta, basically any big city, you pick. How would you go about making friends or basically finding things to do in your spare time?

I'm picking, Miami, FL If I was offered a job there I would take, I would take kinda long to adjust, but I think I would probably take me a year, maybe 8 months at the least to have get a fair/general gist of things. But I have lots of family and in Florida, so they could probably help out.
