How does science explain the origin of life?

Evolution has been proved by science, that I can accept. However, for those who are atheist or agnostic scientists, what explanation do you give for the origin of the very first life forms? How can they have come from nothing? That also goes for the whole universe itself and the Big Bang theory. I am trying to get some sort of idea as to what makes people discard the possibility that God may have been the creator of all that we know.
