What route is best to become a sales director?

I graduated with a bachelor in journalism and am almost done with a masters in media studies. I have an internship in marketing and would like to head into a career as a sales director or maketing director because they make large amounts of money. Can I become a sales director with these credentials or should I take a different route.

It would be difficult to get a job as a sales manager without direct sales experience. A sales director is a leadership position and you have to be able to plan, organize, direct and control the activities of a sales staff. Your credentials will probably get your foot in the door, but then you will have to prove yourself at whatever company you align yourself with. Each company will likely have its own methods of progress and advancement, thus you will have to become more and more qualified according to their standards.

Myself and any other sales directors I've ever met have worked their way up. You must be willing to start as a sales person and prove yourself over time.
