Why is my boss less jovial with me when his wife is around?

I share a secretarial job with my boss' wife (meaning I cover her when she goes on holiday - she goes often alone without my boss, as she visits family and his job is very stressful and he needs to be here more often). When she is away, he cracks jokes and is just more relaxed. As soon as his wife is back on the scene, he gets all anal again and can be quite snappy with me. Why the change?

The wife is probably very dominant and she probably is very jealous of you working with him. You should feel sorry for your boss, she controls him and he's too weak to stand up against it.

In-built defense mechanism of a non-confident person against a suspecting spouce! Perhaps this could be what a self-boasting egoistic secretary wants to here through others' mouth!

You are deliberately trying to suggest something to boost your ego.

His wife is probably a jealous woman who gives him a hard time about being around other women.

He doesn't want his wife to think him anything less than professional with you. For obvious reasons. Just fall off the turnip truck?

His wife is psychologically controlling and he feels he cant be himself when she is around, she is likely possessive and if she saw him joking with you she would make his life difficult, he should divorce her but he is trapped because the expense of the pay off she would demand, he could lose his business and anything... His wife is jealous and controlling. He can only be himself when she is not there or she will make him pay for it...this is VERY common btw.
