The HTC EVO is the best smartphone at present.
To quote GIZMODO:
“You know that scene in Iron Man 2, where Justin Hammer asks Rhodey which weapons he wants inside War Machine—and Rhodey says "all of them"? That's exactly how the Evo 4G was born. Somebody said ‘everything.’”
“The Evo's dossier reads like a phone nerd's sticky back-of-napkin fantasy, which is precisely the point. The Evo is an icon, manufacturer HTC gleefully tugging at customers' hems: Look what we can do!”
“The Evo a beautiful slab. Being the biggest, fastest and strongest—and boastfully so—is a rare trait, marginalized by the Apple-born-but-increasingly-popular mantra that guts don't matter, or at least that you shouldn't talk about them; that the experience should come out of a magical black box. The Evo is HTC's response to that. It's pure guts.”
End quote.

With the upcoming Android 2.2 OS you’ll have, among many other things:
Cloud-to-device messaging
Over-the-air music syncing and streaming
Flash 10.1
The ability to use the phone as a mobile hot-spot for up to 8 devices
Ability to Install Android Apps to SD Card
The World's Fastest Mobile Browser
It will also extend battery life
The new JIT compiler will boost performance to all Android phones that are updated to Android 2.2. Estimates run from 2x-5x, more likely 4x-5x.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.2-highlights.html By the way, I’m happily tethering my laptop to my EVO for FREE via USB using Easytether, a free app from the Android Market.
Google’s Android is the future. It’s developing at a very fast pace and bringing an avalanche of new technologies. Android is open-source and royalty-free, and when you compare it with Apple’s close-mindedness you feel liberated. I love the Google mindset.
I am very highly technical and so is my son. We both have EVOs after looking into many other devices. We have many friends with iPhones and when you compare the two devices in an honest way, the EVO comes out ahead so clearly there is just no contest.
The iPhone’s reign is over. The avalanche of high-powered Androids has begun.
