Is this the pipeline for USMC Recon Officers?

OCS-TBS-MOS school-1st deployment-request recon school instead of a normal B billet-complete BRC and additional schools. This is how it seemed in Nate Fick's One Bullet Away. I know I'm getting ahead of myself a little since I am probably attending PLC Jr.'s next summer.

Right now my PFT is at 288. Since I play college football I have to do a lot of heavy lifting, but I stay about 10 pds under my height/weight limit. I do a mixture SEAL FIT, CROSSFIT, And Tacfit commando after every lifting session. I am also doing MMA 3 days a week for a total of 5 hours. Whta else should I do?

I swim in the ocean a lot, but I don't really know how the military does it, How do I get myself to the next level with swimming?

I know this was pretty lengthy, but I didn't want you people answering to think i was some 14 year old kid playing too many video games; I'm serious about this and have set it as my goal.

Thanks for your time and answers

PS Here are the to SEALfit and TACFIT

I won't tell any of the SI's. All my OSO knows is I want to be a ground contract....

The process for applying for Force Recon and then later MARSOC is pretty much as you listed: Successful completion of OCS, commissioning, TBS, Infantry MOS will pretty much be the most successful line up. It is important to understand the following (sorry about the length):

1. OCS is a screening program to determine if the officer candidate have the leadership, motivation, initiative, integrity, and judgement to qualify for a Marine Corps commission.

a. The academic portion of OCS is the same as enlisted Marines (get a copy of the Marine Corps guidebook, 90?f the material is there).
b. Physical side - not too tough. Your 288 indicates that your muscle groups and stamina have been appropriately formed for all three events. Football players & weight lifters usually have problems with pullups - different muscle groups. As noted by others, watch the weight - big issue in Marine Corps. Muscle mass must get waiver if overweight - lighter is better.
c. Judgment is based on decisions that you make when you are appointed to a candidate staff position such as Platoon Cdr, Platoon Sgt, Company Company, Company Gunny, Company 1st Sgt (the position I had in OCS). Initiative is an important component - never "ASS U & ME" anything - always anticipate. Be good at using a map and compass to land navigate in daylight and dark in brushy and tree filled terrain (especially in TBS) - important for Recon, NEVER be lost regardless if type of terrain and weather conditions - GPS not good enough - battery life.
d. Motivation - always be ready to go no matter how tired and worn out that you may be.
e. Leadership - lead but also work as a team especially in OCS. Listen to others input and suggestions, then make your own decision. This is what commissioned officers do in real Marine Corps - they get info from their staff NCOs and junior officers than make informed decisions. After about the 3rd week, peer evals begin. This is where your fellow candidates rank each other regarding the above attributes. The lowest two candidates in a platoon of 50 are told to depart due to insufficient leadership skills. Some will Drop On Request (DOR). Typically about 30?ho start do not finish.
f. Integrity - NEVER, NEVER lie or cheat.

2nd: Once you have completed the OCS and are commissioned a 2ndLt, you go to TBS. TBS is where Marine 2ndLts are taught to be Marine Officers. At TBS you will also be assigned command billets and will be expected to exercise the academic information taught in class while in the field. Land Nav is the hardest part of TBS for Lts to pass - think map and compass. Never cheat - 13 2ndLts were recently told to pack their bags for the civilian world for cheating on land nav - Marines depend on the officers to go from point A to point B without error - lives depend on it. Be the top 10?f your TBS class. It will take work, but it can be done. The 10?ill get you an infantry MOS out of TBS.

3rd: Excell in infantry training. Listen and learn from your Staff NCOs and your senior Company and platoon officer staff. "Know" the capabilities of each Marine assigned to you and use their skills efficiently. You will receive Officer fitness reports throughout your Marine Corps career. These are used to determine if you will be accepted for special programs such as Force Recon. Get to know your senior officers who grade your performance. Just do your job as well as possible and always be open to learn something new.

4th: After assignment to a Marine Division, Battalion, Company, Platoon AND after a couple of FitReps - you should be able to apply for Force Recon as a 1stLt.
5th: when you apply for Recon, the screening process is very thorough to include interviews. Not everyone makes it into Force Recon who apply. Stay physically fit and have top FitReps that reflect the attributes I listed for OCS above, and you will likely make it.

Swimming - it is important. Do lots of laps. Nothing special. Wouldn't hurt to take up scuba as a hobby (after you are commissioned) - will make the training easier. If you have a cold, NEVER go diving until it completely clears - quick way to get a ear block and rupture an ear drum.

College - focus and get best grades possible. Don't get tied up in physical training to the extent that your GPA suffers. Part of leadership and being a Marine Officer is learning to allocate time efficiently and effectively. You don't have to work out all the time, but if you are able to allocate sufficient time to do so, that will make it easier in OCS, TBS, and later infantry commander.

That's it. Best wishes.

Don't worry about anything now except excelling in PLC. Look at all the career options with an open mind you will have plenty of time in Basic School to make that decision. DO NOT repeat DO NOT tell the DIs ot sergeant instructors that you want to be anything other than a Marine. One think I would stress (and this may be against what your football coaches especially when you play Spring ball) is go to PLC as light as you can. The more you weigh the more weight you have to haul around. I am a retired Navy officer (25 year commissioned service) I went through AFROTC and went to Army jump school as a college undergraduate. I spent a lot of time with Marine Corps officers over the years. The most admired physical specimens are muscular and trim. Don't even think about being Force Recon until you are eligible. Take it one step at a time. Be careful in football a minor knee or ankle injury can ruin any chance for a career in the Naval service.

I've read the book too (great read) and from different officers I've talked too, its all circumstantial. He just so happened to be in the right places at the right time in order to become Recon O at 1LT. Remember the Captain? The one callsign Encino Man I think? Well as you may remember, he was Intel and just got Recon trained before that deployment. The way I figure, if you are aligned with the right combinations of MOS, timing and needs of the Corps, then you can become Recon O, just may or may not be at 1LT.

apparently I confused your question with another asker's... Everything still applies, dont worry about the rank talk

Other Career Questions

Once I graduate high school, I'm not entirely sure what I want to do, but I do know that I want to help people, especially through humanitarian work. I'm also considering joining the military, so my question is what are some military jobs that involve helping people? I would especially like to help with civilians in the area where I'm deployed, regardless of where that is, or what that may entail. So, if anyone has any career suggestions, advice, or other information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

So today I went in for an interview and I was going in for the 2nd interview by the head chief executive. now this is where it got weird, so she asked me about my previous jobs and said how much she liked that product over that product. then she started talking about her daughter? an her divorce ...then how she didn't finish college because she was making more money doing what she did for this company ... then she talked about how her teenage daughter is a handful... I just played it cool thinking she was using some sort of psychology thing to trick me into saying something stupid. the interview ended and she seemed happy an I was escorted to the door... now I'm freaking confused? is this normal behavior for an executive? like it felt like she was going to burst into tears at one point and tell me her life problems... is this normal? was she trying to see how I react or something?

Basically- no degree, although I have tried completing one in the past and stopped because of physical and mental health issues which were overwhelming to deal with along with going to classes full time. I'm not stupid and I am quite articulate. I am 23 and have only worked for about two years retail in high school and stopped working to go to university. I worked a few months in 2010 retail after I dropped out but it was only a seasonal position, and the only reason why I have not been able to constantly work is because of mental health issues. I had also tried going back to community college during my free time since i left university in 2008/9 and I had panic attacks while in community college, which made my anxiety worse from then on. Well recently I met a good doctor and he prescribed me some meds that are stabilizing my moods and I feel the best I've felt in years, and I'm ready to work. Thing is, I don't know how to get a job now since I've spent literally years being depressed and anxious doing nothing. I don't really have anything to put on my resume, and I never finished my AA degree either. All I've done is cashiering and although I do the job well and I get promoted easily when I do these jobs because I'm a hard worker and I try to go above and beyond what they ask of me,which is the attitude I have no matter what kind of work I'm doing as long as I'm getting paid. But I hate cashiering because it's too easy and I want a job that is more interesting. Any suggestions for me on how to get a job that is NOT Retail with the type of background I have right now? I also realize I have to go to college to get certain types of jobs, I am talking about what I can do right here right now.

Recently I have overlooked for a project at work and I am unable to accept it why? I am hard working, dedicated, maintain a very professional decorum, very cordial with my colleagues and bosses, give respect to one and all. Still people who take the p***, argue with managers, gossip mongers have been selected for some very responsible positions at work. I seriously can't get my head around it why, why unprofessional people who have no work ethics being selected over me, whereas I have a track record of excellent performance and never shy away from any work my manager ask me to do? I am at my lowest point and not getting hold of my manager to ask the question why not me, why them who can't even bother? I am feeling like a complete loser, giving years to this place, building my performance, trust and this is how I get rewarded. Why my life is so shit, anything I wish for turns to dust?

So I have a nice white button up shirt, business skirt and pants, and a suit jacket. I'm applying for a software development job and I'm very short and can look young so I'm trying to look adult, yet professional. I'm also attractive so I'm trying not to look too sexy. For the career fair I'm thinking of wearing just my nice shirt and a skirt with low heels. My reasoning being it's approachable and attractive without going overboard since the career fair hosts are mostly younger male recent grads. I want to be remembered but not intimidating. For my interviews I was thinking pants, suit jacket (power suit). My reasoning being it'll be older execs and HR people (mostly women) so less sexy with the pants but more powerful with the suit jacket. What do you think?!

I am in the process of planning my own wedding and I am having a fantastic time doing so. I have always enjoyed planning things: group vacations for my friends and I, road trips, etc... I could be described as a slight control freak and I am a perfectionist. I know I would exceed, and enjoy my career, if I were to make this a possibility. How do I do it? How do I get my name out there? How much do event planners charge for their services? I have a lot of questions, and hope that people who are self employed would be able to give me some pointers on getting my business up and running. Thank You in advance for your time and help.
