What courses should I look for in college if I want to eventually become a software programmer?

I am a rising high school senior and I have decided that I want to become a software programmer. Do to the fact that my adviser is a complete retard, he told me that he had no clue on what to do if I want to pursue that profession and that I would be on my own. So what classes should I look for to start off as my core classes?

Enroll in either a computer science or software engineering major and do the standard course pattern. That would be subjects, first year, such as introduction to programming, computer hardware, and IT. Thanks Bill
