Can I Get A Journalism Job With An English Degree In Professional Writing?

I asked this a while back and everybody kept telling me I couldn't but I was looking at a lot of news anchors and journalist and a lot of them majored in english? (katie couric) Anyways, is professional writing journalism? Because a lot of people say it pertains more to the publishing field but I thought that was creative writing? I'm lost and my school doesn't have a direct journalism degree so I need help. Thanks in advance :)

I would think that you'd be able to get a job as a journalist as long as you have knowledge of the AP style or writing and you know how to use the Chicago Manual of Style... More

Journalism is a style of "professional writing". With an English degree like the one you are describing, you are learning the different writing styles, but not specializing in one certain area. Yes, they majored in English or Journalism, but they didn't major in "professional writing," because that degree didn't exist when people like Couric were in school. It's a later development, and it is not the same as a solid English or solid Journalism degree... More
