How would one have gone from New York City to Flagstaff Arizona in 1940?

I am helping make a fan-made Indiana Jones point and click game. My job is to make the map scenes. The first one I am working on is starting in New York City and ending in Flagstaff Arizona. I am guessing that from New York one would fly to Chicago, then Dallas, then Phoenix and then drive to Flagstaff. I want to be accurate. What route would Indy have taken?

Commercial aviation wasn't popular before World War II. So flying would have been out of the question, and unless he flew his own plane. He most likely would have driven the Lincoln Highway from New York to where it met up with Route 66 and then continued west to Arizona.
