What is the problem with the NY Rangers? Why can't they be Stanley Cup contenders?

I recently started watching NHL games and have been to one of their games last season. I really like this team, but last year realized that it is hard to expect them today to go far... I'm assuming that they should be one of the richest franchises in NHL and that since salaries for NHL players are lower than other major sports - and there are also lots of great international players - they should be a top contender if they did a better job on prospecting and hiring.

They have an incompetent GM, period. And he's been their GM for over a decade, which has halted any progress towards a Cup they may have made without him. Ridiculous free-agent signings (Donald Brashear, 37 years old, 2 years at $2.8 million), Derek Boogaard (4 years at almost $7 million), Wade Redden (WAY too much... More

Well when they spend 32 million of their 59 million in cap space on 6 players but only 2 of them are any good u can see why they aren't very good. Also they spent 1.6 million a year for 4 years on a guy who plays 3 minutes a game and has as many goals in the past four years in the NHL as u or me. Their GM is an... More

What they need to do is be more like a team and work together so that means more passing and less indvidual and they should give Valliquette a chance one game you think?????

I've always thought that they try too much to be like the Yankees by over-spending and trying to buy championships. But a little (or huge) problem: salary cap.

You can't expect them to fix up the organization with what your suggesting. They need to sign some free agents, make some trades and trade away draft picks. They can get rid of a 5-10 year rebuilding phase like the leafs and go obsolete by trading away some high draft picks for some good players. I don't really see... More

As a Rangers fan myself, I hear this question all the time. I think the main reason is because you're not supposed to build a team through Free Agency. It's only meant to fill in a few areas that the team has struggled with. Marian Gaborik was a good signing because we didn't have a sniper to lead the way offensively... More

To be honest i kinda wonder the same. I think they lack a little scoring depth cause after gaborik there isnt much scoring punch. Although i think dubinsky is becoming a solid young player. Not really sure how the management is but its obvious the rangers are very rich, and if they can use some of their money to add... More

Glen Sather. And horrible asset management. When Wade Redden and Chris Drury are two of your three highest-paid forwards (I don't include goalies because Lundqvist is an unbelievable goalie and deserves to be paid as such), you're doing it wrong, Glen. Nearly $14 million just to those two players? Yikes.
