What is a good family place to live and commute to Seattle?

My husband has just been offered a job in Seattle, so I'm looking for a nice, AFFORDABLE, place to plant roots that's not too far. He'd like to commute via ferry, but that's negotiable. I'm from Illinois, and the real estate market is quite a shock! I'm thinking: small, quaint "community" feel and a great school district is a must.
