what exactly is the difference between a marriage and a civil union?

i'm gay and before i heard about civil unions i wanted gays to be able to marry, but then i hear talk of this "civil union" that allows gays to unite? or marry? i don't get it. now i think why mess with straights and their marriage while we have our own unions? they have an over 50% divorce rate anyways, obviously marriage can't be that great. but i do think that equality will prevail and gay marriage will be legal, just not yet. so for the time being, what is a civil union?

Do you know why a lot of straight people are ok with gays being able to get civil unions but don't want us to marry? Think separate water fountains. Civil unions are "less than" and no self respecting gay person should enter one. Marriage is not a heterosexual privilege.

A civil union does not grant near as many rights as a marriage license does. most people are not aware of exactly what being able to marry means. There are hundreds of rights that go along with that paper. once, for example, is the fact that if you're married in one state then you're married everywhere. Lets say I... More
