Ideas needed for 'activities with elderly care home residents'.?

I have recently been employed as an Activities Coordinator in a care home for the elderly. Some of them have dementia, some of them are totally reliant on wheelchairs and assistance in everything they do and some are perfectly ok other than being elderly.
I've not done this job before and Im finding it difficult to get the ball rolling and please so many people!
I'd love some ideas from anyone, pleeeease. Thanks so much :)

I was an activities directory years ago and it was the most rewarding job I have ever had. First let me say that these fine people deserve respect above all. Many times they are treated and spoken to like children.
Now to the fun stuff. I looked at the patient care books to see what types of activities they had done in the past. It was boring, so I spent three days introducing myself to each resident and getting to know them. I asked them what activities they would enjoy doing and they had plenty suggestions.

I started each day with a group in the dining room. We had coffee, juice, pastries and fruit served. I would get the daily local newspaper and read the headlines. If anyone was interested to hear details, I would read the full article. They really seemed to enjoy this and it kept them up to date on local, state, national and international events. Many have lost their vision to the point it is difficult to read but the had a strong interest in hearing me read the paper. ( don't overlook the sports section)

Pet therapy is a wonderful experience for the residents. There are many fine people that will volunteer their time to bring in a dog or cat for a visit. Some residents were very withdrawn from people but responded well to animals. If you can have a permanent pet at your facility that would be a wonderful gift to everyone there.

Invite local schools to perform at your facility. The band, chorus, drill team, drama club, anything they want to do. Residents usually love seeing kids and find their performance very entertaining. The schools are always willing to participate as a community service.

One activity they really loved was balloon volleyball. It is easy to do indoors with an open space like the dining room. Line chairs and wheelchairs in 2 lines about 10' apart. If you can arrange a net great, but it isn't necessary. Play just as you would a standard volleyball game, except serve from the front line. It is easy, the balloon won't hurt anyone if they are hit.

I took the men fishing on Father's Day on a long dock at the city park. They had a blast. I borrowed fishing gear from friends and added it to what I had. Do not promise them to eat their catch, I did and was told by the kitchen staff that no fish with bones could be served. I hurried to the fish market, bought loads of flounder and had it served. They never knew, but had a wonderful meal.

Encourage family participation every chance you get. I planned a family reunion for everyone to attend. It was great. We grilled burgers outside, kids running around, awards for the most offspring, oldest and youngest grandchild, the most children...lots of fun.

We grew a garden too. Started by letting them plant seeds in peat pots that we later transplanted to the grounds outside. They took great pride in their contribution to a beautiful oasis in which they could escape from the "white coats" and enjoy.

Hopefully you have a van to transport residents with. If you do, take every opportunity to get them out for a while. Watch a local holiday parade, or just go for a joy ride. It is heaven for them.

This is getting to be a really long answer so let me end this by saying this...get to know each resident personally. You are their hero. You are the only one in the facility that is dedicated to seeing they have some fun in their life. Think outside the box. Ask them what they would like to do. Treat them as adults and with respect.

My mum- in - law was in a wonderful home for two years at the end of her life; these are some of the many activities and treats laid in for her and the other residents
Garden Party - on a sunny day, they had a tea with lovely ' posh' sandwiches and cakes, some games and entertainment ( a lady singer, who sang old songs and got them to join in, and some girls from a local dance academy ) All residents dressed up in their best things, many wore hats!
Regular entertainment in the lounge - choirs from local schools, a gospel choir from the Baptist Church were very popular, as were the Latin American dance demos !
Manicures and make- overs
Crafts were encouraged - even those who could just knit or crochet a bit kept their hands busy
Things they made were used in the annual Christmas Fair or Easter Parade
Aromatherapy and other treatments - the local college sent students to practise on them
Regular trips out in the mini- bus

Make them smile. Bring in some children from the schools to sing to them.
Answered By: Sally Anne - 8/24/2010
Your not going to please all of them so don't even start to try. I have found that a lot of them like to play Bingo. For prizes they like bananas and small stuffed animals and quarters.
A lot of them like to sing or just listen to someone else sing.
Some are able to do gardening or window gardens.
Birthday parties, make cards, decorate cookies.
Get community volunteers involved with the Bingo games, they can bring prizes and treats like cupcakes for the residents playing Bingo.

Hi,
I am a care worker of the communtiy, so speaking from experiance different things seem to work to assist the elderly.
Dominos and draughts are usually a good activity to fill their time as a lot of the elderly would have played this during their spare time themselves.
I once set up a activity for time lines, where we sorted through pictures and life events (major ones like Marriage, Childrens Births, Grandchildren etc) then added through extra personal special days, i.e retirement days or anything else that is special to them.
Choir singing, or entertainment ran by the elderly themselves is a great way to get people out of themselves, i.e if someone used to play the piano/guitar or anything.
You could also organise for a local school/brownies/scouts to come in and put on a little show for them?
Hope this helps.
Good Luck x

Some could play Monopoly or cards with each other and some could draw pictures with crayons. And there's the games I used to play at summer camp around the fire: one person starts a story, then the next continues, and it goes around until it's really funny. And have some music on in the background from the 50s to the 80s (or an oldies radio station).
Answered By: Court - 8/23/2010
Make a set of activity cards for exercises. Each card has a movement on with the number of repetitions (do them to music) Each person is dealt a card and you work round the group.

Make a set of recognition cards. This could be old film stars of the 1930s or 40s and so on. You could work with these cards as part of a group or individually.

Music and movement is always fun. Just work out a routine and bobs your uncle.

So i was reading up on this program called Senior Community Service Emplyment Program (SCSEP) and its something that gives senior citizens temporary jobs at community service places to build skills so that they can find better employment. Why does that need to be done? is there discrimination against them when hiring or what? Why do they need that. Please put your resources because I need to site my footnotes and stuff. I need proof and watnot., for speech class:/

The son's girlfriend claimed head of household on her taxes. She does not have a job. Its not her house. Now the senior citizen has to prove that the girlfriend is just a boarder.

So today I went in for an interview and I was going in for the 2nd interview by the head chief executive. now this is where it got weird, so she asked me about my previous jobs and said how much she liked that product over that product. then she started talking about her daughter? an her divorce ...then how she didn't finish college because she was making more money doing what she did for this company ... then she talked about how her teenage daughter is a handful... I just played it cool thinking she was using some sort of psychology thing to trick me into saying something stupid. the interview ended and she seemed happy an I was escorted to the door... now I'm freaking confused? is this normal behavior for an executive? like it felt like she was going to burst into tears at one point and tell me her life problems... is this normal? was she trying to see how I react or something?

Basically- no degree, although I have tried completing one in the past and stopped because of physical and mental health issues which were overwhelming to deal with along with going to classes full time. I'm not stupid and I am quite articulate. I am 23 and have only worked for about two years retail in high school and stopped working to go to university. I worked a few months in 2010 retail after I dropped out but it was only a seasonal position, and the only reason why I have not been able to constantly work is because of mental health issues. I had also tried going back to community college during my free time since i left university in 2008/9 and I had panic attacks while in community college, which made my anxiety worse from then on. Well recently I met a good doctor and he prescribed me some meds that are stabilizing my moods and I feel the best I've felt in years, and I'm ready to work. Thing is, I don't know how to get a job now since I've spent literally years being depressed and anxious doing nothing. I don't really have anything to put on my resume, and I never finished my AA degree either. All I've done is cashiering and although I do the job well and I get promoted easily when I do these jobs because I'm a hard worker and I try to go above and beyond what they ask of me,which is the attitude I have no matter what kind of work I'm doing as long as I'm getting paid. But I hate cashiering because it's too easy and I want a job that is more interesting. Any suggestions for me on how to get a job that is NOT Retail with the type of background I have right now? I also realize I have to go to college to get certain types of jobs, I am talking about what I can do right here right now.

Recently I have overlooked for a project at work and I am unable to accept it why? I am hard working, dedicated, maintain a very professional decorum, very cordial with my colleagues and bosses, give respect to one and all. Still people who take the p***, argue with managers, gossip mongers have been selected for some very responsible positions at work. I seriously can't get my head around it why, why unprofessional people who have no work ethics being selected over me, whereas I have a track record of excellent performance and never shy away from any work my manager ask me to do? I am at my lowest point and not getting hold of my manager to ask the question why not me, why them who can't even bother? I am feeling like a complete loser, giving years to this place, building my performance, trust and this is how I get rewarded. Why my life is so shit, anything I wish for turns to dust?

So I have a nice white button up shirt, business skirt and pants, and a suit jacket. I'm applying for a software development job and I'm very short and can look young so I'm trying to look adult, yet professional. I'm also attractive so I'm trying not to look too sexy. For the career fair I'm thinking of wearing just my nice shirt and a skirt with low heels. My reasoning being it's approachable and attractive without going overboard since the career fair hosts are mostly younger male recent grads. I want to be remembered but not intimidating. For my interviews I was thinking pants, suit jacket (power suit). My reasoning being it'll be older execs and HR people (mostly women) so less sexy with the pants but more powerful with the suit jacket. What do you think?!

I am in the process of planning my own wedding and I am having a fantastic time doing so. I have always enjoyed planning things: group vacations for my friends and I, road trips, etc... I could be described as a slight control freak and I am a perfectionist. I know I would exceed, and enjoy my career, if I were to make this a possibility. How do I do it? How do I get my name out there? How much do event planners charge for their services? I have a lot of questions, and hope that people who are self employed would be able to give me some pointers on getting my business up and running. Thank You in advance for your time and help.

Any specific advice on what clothing items this MALE student should wear to work would be helpful. The dress code is "business casual". As if any student knows what that means.

I'm applying online for a job at Debenhams. It's just a temporary part time job but I have no previous retail experience, just in customer service, and I am finding some of the questions rather difficult. Our commitment to training and development encourages our people to grow their futures with us. If successful in joining our team, how will you become an expert at what you do? and At Debenhams, our people make all the difference to our customers. If you were a Stock Movement Adviser with us, how would our customers know that you are focused on their individual shopping experience? Any help in answering these questions would be greatly appreciated, many thanks!
