How long do you have to go to school to be a Private Investigator?

I'm writing a story, and I'd like my character to be a Private Investigator, but I'm not sure what a believable age to make him would be. I want to make him as young as possible, but still with a few years of on-the-job experience under his belt.

He should be at least thirty. Most private investigators learn on the job at a law enforcement agency and then leave to become PIs. You usually don't need a college degree to become a private investigator. Many private investigators have a college degree, and some firms might require their investigators to have a degree.
