I want to be a chemist and work on discovering new drugs....?

Chemists and materials scientists held about 94,100 jobs in 2008. Chemists accounted for about 84,300 of these, and materials scientists accounted for about 9,700 jobs. In addition, 24,800 chemists held faculty positions; these workers are covered in the statement on teachers—postsecondary, elsewhere in the Handbook. is 94,000 jobs a decent amount? I plan on getting a Masters of Science in medicinal chemistry from Rutgers and I want to work in a federal job because apparently, they hire more and pay a bit more. Oh and what's a scientific R&D services firm? the bureau of labor statistics says that companies are turning to them instead of opening their own R&D department.

R&D services usually involve outsourcing. Say a drug company wants to produce a new compound to treat a disease. Instead of doing themselves (in house) they turn to outsourcing R&D services. Hope this helps. Good luck with your career.
