how do you know if a law firm is reputable or successful?

I've got a friend looking for a labor relations firm, but they don't how to choose a firm that has a successful track record for winning in similar suits. How does one determine which firm will be more likely to ensure a positive outcome?

After working at law firms for most of my life, I must conclude that there is no sure way for a person with no familiarity of the law to know what they are getting when they hire an attorney. Bring an ambulance siren and set it up outside the office door with a remote. Upon entering the office, ring the siren, if they remain in the building you've got yourself a good lawyer. Caveat Emptor, watch out for stampedes!
