this is my idea for a sci fi novel me and my friend are co writing, what do you think?
sorry its so long but please i need some positive or negative criticism its going to be a series of short story revolving around this universe Lets begin, begin in the beginning. Man had conquered the elements, the earth and its waters and minerals were all utilized in mans final reach for the stars. It was in these years ( the age of space) that man inhabited the planets of his solar system and harnessed the sun. Mankind settled Mars and established many facility’s on the orbits of the many great gas giants of they're system. Man was in a golden age, all countries seemed to absolve as mans interest was no longer focused on the small picture, all the resources that were needed to maintain life were abundant and the only hostility found in this new frontier was that of the cold vacuum of space and the negotiations of the freight tycoons who now flourished with there new found abundance of supplies. But the ambition of man is an insatiable hunger. Man had only but conquered and exploited one of the trillions of stars that dotted the never ending horizon. So began the deep space race. Scientists scrambled for the solution, they had the knowledge now all they needed was the technology to utilize it. Like the space race many ages before it the deep space variant did not lack its share of hostility and self centered pride. It was with the advent of instant quantum messaging that man saw its first step into the universe, the technology utilized quantum entanglement which in a nut shell defied the speed of light. As mans technology developed the human race seemed to idle, the human population enjoyed its new found prosperity and laziness ensued for many upon many of years, they merely required a kick start to bring there attentions back to the skies. The development of deep space engines (particularly the ones relying on the spontaneous traversal of space time) was met with much confusion and heartbreak, the search for the answer was only met with more questions. The day finally came though, this day would sit among the many defining moments in human history. It was a normal day surrounded by the sea of stars the first successful flight into deep space took place, on man would change mans destiny for this action would draw the attention of an unknown entity. The vessel appeared out of place its design seemed impractical and flawed, it had the shape of the early space craft it was rocket shaped. But the streamlining of this vessel was unnesassary for space is void of air and this vessel did not need to escape the atmosphere of any planet. The avid onlookers of scientists and scholars humored in this unintended and all together appropriate tribute. The space craft took its one man crew out 200 thousand light years into space. The ship utilized a prototype drive which created a subspace temporal displacement which avoided the side affects of time elapsing. The mission was a success, the man messaged earth with the quantum messenger and the world was stunned. The human race flourished but to there dismay they were still alone, there did not seem to be any intelligent life as far as they could search. There were also many limitation to there new interstellar drives, the drives required dark matter the rarest of the resources. Dark matter is only found in the most violent of neutron stars and mining these stars for this life blood of industry was a dangerous job. Wackos as they come to be called, went forth without any corporate funding into the great universe, many of these “Wackos” became stranded in space due to lack of fuel supply. But other “Wackos” were more successful, finding planets stable enough to establish an artificial atmosphere as well as a colony. These colonies were the closest to individual governments in this new golden age of pioneering. The extending arms of humanity seemed unstoppable in the eyes of mankind, it seemed mankind was the sole occupant in the universe. But in the 400th year of the pioneering age all that mankind perceived as the universe changed. On the science and research center orbiting the an unnamed moon on the far reaches of man grasp there appeared a blip on the sensors, the object was showing to be roughly the size of earths moon but had the density rivaling that of brightest youngest stars in the milky way, its surface; black and devoid of any characteristics it was a perfect orb, a sphere of unfathomable geometric flawlessness. It would be an object of much speculation for years to come.

Okay, you have a good background. Now, write a story incorporating the background into the story. You'll need a character, in a setting (which is what you have already) with a problem. How does your protagonist solve the problem?

It's a little slow for an introduction, I would shorten it by about half. You can just add the parts you don't use into the short stories later on. You don't really need to establish everything from the beginning, since it will be a number of short stories, you can simply weave all this detail in between active... More
