Questions about the Navy?

Hi everyone, within a few years I'm planning on enlisting into the U.S. Navy, and I have a few questions for anyone knowledgeable about enlisting, or who has joined the Navy themselves. First off, just to be clear, when and how do new enlistees choose their ratings? Or is it based off their skills and knowledge that they are assigned certain ratings? I know we will go to Great Lakes, Illinois for basic training, as I've done some research myself, but exactly how long will basic training take, or is that also dependent on your choice of rating that you will have minimal/maximized training or alternative training? Another question I have is how long are sea tours for? I hear they can last anywhere to a year or two, but are you actually out at sea for that long? Or are you stationed on a base but off U.S. soil? And how often, and for what amount of time, will we be back in the states? Or is this all dependent on the status of global conflicts/status or the choice of the Navy to send us out whenever they need us? Thank you very much to anyone who will/has answered all my questions! I really need to know this before I enlist, if that makes sense. :)
