Where is a good place for a young couple to start out their life together?

We're pretty young, but we have lived in ME for our entire lives. I'm looking to attend college for Biology. My fiance is currently working as a cook, and is looking to eventually go to school for that. Until then, he would like to have a cooking job, but nothing huge. We're small town kids, we're not looking for the country or the city, somewhere in the middle would be nice. Near the ocean, on either coast. Factors to consider, safety in the community, rent prices, available employment Thanks!
