What is the shortest amount of active duty time you can have as a Navy SEAL or a Marine?

I'm just curious. So if you have to be on active duty for 4 years does that mean you cannot see your family or friends at home for 4 years except for the very rare and short occasions that you might get for leave? This is the biggest factor that makes me question joining the military...I'd like to be able to see my family and friends and have some sort of life while I'm still young.

You will get 30 days paid leave per year to go see them. You will also get long weekends and some holidays. It depends on how close you live, and what you choose to do with your off time as to how often you will see them.

For a Marine it is four years active duty with four more years in the reserve. When I was in the Marine Corps one could serve for two years active duty and four years in the reserve. I signed up for three years active duty. They guys who signed up for two years were sent to Vietnam as soon as possible.
