It is an individuals choice. In the state of California there is a "Living Will" (DNR Do Not Resuscitate, No Code Blue, No CPR, No Breathing Machines) and patients are encouraged to have a DPOA (Durable Power of Attorney) to speak for them if they are not able to speak for themselves.
