If I wanted to become a fishing reel designer for a company like Abu Garcia, what should I get a degree in?

I'm a senior in high school and my passion is fishing. I'm pretty smart so I would be able to go to a good engineering school. Would mechanical engineering be best?

yes, mechanical engineering is the way to go. but thats a broad field, make sure you dont end up taking classes that prepare you for HVAC or plumbing careers. farm implements, elevator companies, cars, aircraft, appliances..blah blah. all industries that require mechanical engineers... More

I'm not sure, but I would think a career like that would be difficult to get into. It's probably safe to say that there are much more logical career paths to take. There's a lot of fields that you could get into involving fishing and the outdoors in general... More

Engineering would be a good start. You actually can design one and then patent it and sale it to Abu Garcia. A new product line takes ingenuity.

Industrial design might be a better start than engineering. The principles of how reels work (gears, springs, bearings, drag washers) are well understood; you want to put such things together and create a better mousetrap, and design (including human factors) has a lot to do with that... More
