Do people really believe feminists single handedly changed the western world for women?

I keep seeing people say that feminists are responsible for career women, for the vote, for entry into professions and for abortion being legalised. As if no-one else in the world had a hand in it. As if this relatively small group of women and men changed laws and improved or destroyed society (as you see it) all by themselves. In my view feminists raised consciousness of inequalities. Consciousness raising was the term they used. The rest was up to society and society agreed that it was unfair for women not to vote or to own property and that we should work in the professions and earn as much as men for the same jobs. I see questions on here about what will happen when feminism dies out or saying that by getting rid of feminists everything would go back to how it was. Does anyone out there really think that if feminists stopped existing women would not want careers or to vote or be employed? Is every career woman a feminist? Is every female voter? Do only feminists have abortions? I am one who wouldn't but this is something feminists have worked for. If people stopped raising awareness of racial inequality would all the white people rise up and try to enslave all the black people? Mymble - I agree completely. The consciousness raising was very important. I am a feminist. What concerns me are the questions which seem to suggest that feminists bullied these things through over everybody else who wanted things to stay the same.;_ylt=AnuKrWHK05.ks5jIpTIyjCghBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20101112100252AA2CaKf The western world is ruled by feminists.;_ylt=Aiud9Jd4hYWdL7W6f8AiQGUhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20101109130217AATgy4U Only feminists and all feminists are pro abortion.;_ylt=AtRsOLgOs1WcCucXCJorKZkhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20101108022528AAmSJr3 Feminists have ruined marriage;_ylt=AmMFgL4xGwcn7VekjGxAVAchBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20101106090547AA41Jj1 Feminists have ruined the family and so it goes on. Feminists raised awareness, women wanted equality, men wanted women to have equality. People wanted equality.

I've never seen any such claim. The women responsible for promoting equality and freedom of choice acted as a touch paper - of course the realisation of such things was due to societal shift. That doesn't mean the nod to the catalysts involved should be any less reverential though... More

I think, especially in the case of England, feminists kept the issue of women's rights to the forefront of everyones minds, but only when the first world war began and the women were given a chance to work did everyone see how capable women are... More

I don't have a direct answer for you but I think part of the issue is women being squeamish about being identified as feminist, while enjoying the rights of a modern woman.
