What are linguistics and what are they used for?

I am so confused as to what linguistics are. I Googled it and it said it is the science of language or something.\ But I do not understand what that means. Can somebody explain in greater detail exactly what this is and what type of jobs people get with this degree? Thanks!!

Linguistics is the general profession for studying language. You learn about grammar, syntax (word order), phonetics (how you pronounce words), pragmatics (what is more appropriate to say), etc as a basis then you go on to more specific things... More

physics ->> planets, stars, forces, acceleration, big bang theory etc biology ->> plants, animals, cells, reproduction, life etc etc linguistics ->> sentence structure, punctuation, characters, writing style etc etc } and it can be about any language french english spanish etc
