Can I use quickrete to do Concrete patch job?

	Can I use quickrete to do Concrete patch job? Well I recieved call from one lady whose driveway i fixed my putting ashphalt patch over concrete driveway she had. She loves it. Now she called and she has similar job at her other house. Problem is...its almost -12 outside here(Winnipeg,Manitoba,Canada) So my question is,can I use Quickrete and re-bars to do same kind of patch over cracks(to straighten the driveway) and will it hold the weight of car? Hay Gabe for starters, Home Depot in California's recommendations regarding cold weather concreting should be considered for an extended time prior to proceeding. This is especially true when it is suggested that hot water be added to a very fast setting concrete unless you are prepared to handle the resulting flash set and avoid cold joints. The simplified comment to keep the concrete from freezing sounds good until you figure out how to implement their suggestions. Quikrete is a very handy product and can be used for many things usually minor in magnitude. The thinner the concrete thickness the more difficult it would be to keep the concrete from freezing. The sub grade upon which the new concrete is placed must also be raised and kept above freezing to keep the new surface from freezing at at the joint. Mass concrete placements generate heat that assists in keeping the concrete from freezing. It is nearly impossible to utilize the heat of hydration to keep thin placements from freezing. You therefore would have to cover the initial subsurface and bring the surface temperature to something like 40 degrees (F.) before the concrete is placed and then keep the temp at at least 40 F. until the concrete is curred. This is not practical. As noted quikrete is a great product and the fast curing materials are very good but they are rather expensive. The likelihood of producing an acceptable finished product this late in the season is rather remote. Have you seen any contractors in your area placing any thin section concrete recently? Unless the driveway repair has to be repaired because of an extreme emergency there is no reasonable reason to do the work at this time of year. I would suggest waiting until the freezing potential is over next spring to avoid all the heating and protection costs and check what types of topping concrete is available from a local concrete supplier. I would add fiber mesh, which can be provided in the topping concrete and avoid using any reinforcing bars. To get a good bond with the initial concrete you should use a "milk" product available at your local building supply which is specifically made to bond the old and new surfaces. If the quantity does not merit involvement of a concrete supplier, Quikrete has a lot more cost effective concrete's that will not set as fast allowing you more finish time and reducing your clients cost significantly. For what it's worth asphalt and concrete patches are significantly different in many ways. Good luck in your efforts, learn what your doing and what to expect before you commit to a project. Hey Gabe: This is Mike , With The Home Depot in California. For an answer to your question, I went to Quikrete.com. They have several products you can use. Probably the best choice is either Quikrete Rapid Road Repair, which sets in 17 to 25 minutes and can withstand a 3000 pound load in 1 hour, in ideal conditions. It will take longer to set in cold conditions. Or Quikrete Commercial Grade concrete mix which sets in 5-10 minutes, and will withstand a 3000 pound load after just 24 hours. Again it will take longer to set in cold conditions. The only precaution is when the temperature is below 40 degrees F ( 4degrees C) warm water should be used and insulation should be applied to protect the product from freezing. 	What kind of jobs can you get with over 30 years of experience in construction? My father has owned his own small business (very small, like only 2 employees) in concrete and construction for over 30 years now. 	How do I get a job with Dodgy work history and no experience? Basically- no degree, although I have tried completing one in the past and stopped because of physical and mental health issues which were overwhelming to deal with along with going to classes full time. I'm not stupid and I am quite articulate. I am 23 and have only worked for about two years retail in high school and stopped working to go to university.
