How is Southern California during the summer(for a visitor/tourist)?

I plan on going in either July or August, a friend of mine told me its extremely crowded. I want to visit the beach, the amusement parks and all of the attractions. Will it even be worth it? Would September be better? I'm not even sure, if I could do it September, due to my job. What are the things that you can do in SoCal during the summer months? Is that the best time of year to visit? Thanks a lot...
