Is it acceptable to telephone outsourced customer service centers to talk about the local culture?
I would like to learn more about India from people who live there. Is it acceptable to ring up customer service and ask the technician in India about his country?

No. If you really want to learn more about India you should join groups that cater towards learning about different cultures. Calling someone on the phone for the specific reason of asking them about their country, it is not only unnecessary (on their end) but it could be a grounds for dismissal. Their job is to... More

That would probably get them in trouble, because it wouldn't be company business. I'm sure India has a tourist bureau, or even a US embassy that you could call and ask those things.
