My understanding (I've been out of the AF since 1998) is that you cannot just join the Air Force as a Flight Engineer. You must have 5 - 7 level in an appropriate career field (typically maintenance, load master etc.) and than apply to become a Flight Engineer.

From what I could find you need to have some experience first. Read here: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/airforceenlistedjobs/a/afjob1a1x1.htm http://ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Become-an-Air-Force-Flight-Engineer&id=1134290

1. You must be prior service from a maintenance AFSC to apply to be a Flight Engineer. 2. It is NOT an entry level AFSC 3. Most of the Flight Engineers are former Crew Chiefs 4. You can apply to cross train as a Flight Engineer after 35 months time in service.
