We are told to be unique individuals, yet we are supposed to conform to society, where is the line?

Why for example would i be acknowledged as unique if say i was part of some alternative fashion scene (though its an oxymoron as theirs conforment in them too) & had all my specific beliefs. Yet i'm taught to want a good job, car, family, respect others, support home grown foods etc etc. Where is the line & is there not a contradiction?

You become unique individual by being particularly good at something. Preferably something that you can get paid for. You conform by not being too bad at everything else, specifically being able to provide for oneself.
