What do you consider interview appropriate attire?

I work for a computer consulting firm as an Administrative Assistant including working Human Resources. Today I had ten people come in for job interviews in our office and only two of them were wearing what I would consider office appropriate clothing, not office casual but office appropriate. Three of them wore dirty tennis shoes, two of them wore tee-shirts, one with food stains on it and four of them wore jeans. Since I spoke to all of these people on the phone and told them that the dress code was office wear I'm wondering what the general public considers office appropriate attire for an interview

wow...jeans and tennis shoes? That wouldn't be right just for a regular day at work if your office id business casual....most people usually step it up a notch on in interview to help give a good impression.

Nice slacks and buttoned shirt or blouse. Dress shoes heels no more than three. Inches. Darker colors. No stains or logos on clothing no jeans until you say they are allowed casual dress. Tie acceptable. Even polo shirt one color. Skirt around the knee
