I have a problem about chemistry lab groups...it makes me so stressed?!?
I'm really really sorry if this is long, I tried to cut out as much as I could but I hope if you have time you can skim it and offer some advice... any advice!! This has bothered me for a while. I'm taking AP Chemright now. I'm a junior so yes grades are important. We have lab groups of 3 or 4 recommended, but the teacher said "fewer than 4" for a group. I don't know many people in the class (at first), so I became a group with 3 guys. I am the only girl in that group. Now I know that makes me stand out but that's not the problem. There is one group that had 3 girls, but one girl dropped so now they only have 2. So these 2 girls want me to work with them, since I seem like a easy target cause I'm the only girl in a group of 4 with guys. Now, I understand that they want another person to work with them, I would too. Though I didn't want to work with them, I felt bad for them too, so I was like okay, I'll work with you guys this time. So I worked with them for about 2 labs so far and am not having a good time. These girls are NICE, but we aren't close friends. One girl isn't very smart so she has no idea what is going on. The other girl is average. But I feel like I am "leading" the group. Today, I had to explain to both of them what to do cause they didn't understand the procedure that was posted ahead of time. Then I had to use up some of the lab time telling them what to do like getting the chemicals, watching the reaction. like today we had to watch for a color change and it it wasn't for me, we would have missed it. It was frustrating because there is already not enough time, and I felt like I was doing most of the lab.. I saw other lab groups around me who were already DOING The lab when I was trying to explain what to do. And I just felt like I was doing a job that was for more than one person to do... now i do feel selfish kind of when i say that i am working with the boys (who take me back anytime) since i don't want to work with the not so smart girls, but i need someone on par to work with me... it's frustrating having to explain it all so: do you think I should join the girls or not? what would you do if you were the girls? try to work as a group of 2 or what...? there are no other groups of 2 in my class, but I heard that in the past there have been. but I'm not sure if that was a special circumstance or what.

You can work with either group: the boys or the girls. If you work with the girls, you're going to have your patience tested, but it's a great opportunity to learn how to lead but also how to function in the real world coming up. You will rarely meet anyone for the rest of your life, scholastically or in the workplace... More
