Does martial arts actually work in street self defence situations?What does actually work?

I've asked this in Law Enforcement & Police because I'm looking for sensible answers.Maybe from a copper or a prison officer or someone else who deals with violence as part of their job?

Really martial arts is a bit of a double edged blade - yes it is effective generally. The down side to martial arts is the legal issues - if you're trained in a form of martial arts you must be more careful to use only necessary force and respond to a threat appropriately. If you want to see what a street fight looks like, watch a UFC or other Mixed Martial Arts match. Learning a combination of striking, takedowns, groundfighting, etc. is what works the best.

It can. I have been involved in martial arts since I was a teenager. Over the years I have seen so many people get their first lessons then go out thinking they are bad and get their butts kicked. It happens all the time. You see it with people right out of military boot camp too... More
