How can I modernize the story of Disney's "The Little Mermaid"?

I was thinking of making her a normal girl who sees this celebrity on tv and she loves him so she runs away from her overbearing father to be with him. but to do that she has to change her body/face because she's not beautiful enough or something so she gets plastic surgery from some evil woman. I was thinking of her "saving" Eric by singing in a show for him or something, but she leaves right after so he doesn't know her name and she's in a costume so he doesn't know what she looks like. But that doesn't really work. Ariel isn't a normal girl, she's a princess too. And Ursula (the sea witch) makes Ariel a human in exchange for her voice. Then Ariel has to make Eric kiss her within 3 days or she's Ursula's slave. In today's time, that's not really realistic. Can I have some help developing this story? I am aware that it's not the original version, that's why I said "Disney's". I don't want to do the original version because she dies. Not the happy ending I was looking for. Wow guys EXCELLENT ideas! HP, you filled in the blanks I couldn't get. Fantastic job everybody! :)

You could have the Hollywood story, with a girl from the middle of nowhere, who lives in a city of population 1,000 and wants nothing more than to be a star. She's 16 years old, a high school dropout, stuck in a factory job because her dad needs the money to help raise her younger sisters... More

. You can add a couple of things like she signs a contract saying she cannot sing for anyone but her own producer and so she can't sing for Eric and he can't recognize her voice. The contract ends three years from then and he has a plan to marry someone else and in that time they become friends, but he meets another... More

How about if she's the celebrity and just wants to be normal? She gets a friend to pretend to be the heiress, princess, singer, whatever-- and she plays the part of her friend's personal assistant. Then she meets a guy who isn't into pop culture and doesn't know her true identity. She falls for him, but isn't... More

The Disney version you are thinking of IS a modernization of The Little Mermaid. It's originally a Hans Christen Anderson story. It's been modernized in a hundred other ways as well you just probably didn't notice... More

I kind of like where you're going with this. What if ariel is the daughter of a rich powerful business mogul and sneaks out of their mansion to see shows. At one show like a small talent search show, she sees eric, a no-name person now, get bad stage fright. Ariel fell in love with his face and not wanting to see him... More
