What is it about the way the Catholic church is set up that makes it a good hiding place for pedophiles?

A lack of sex does not turn anyone into a pedophile.
pedophiles tend to take jobs where they are around children, because it's an easy cover.
as well, i believe the fact that priests aren't allowed to marry makes it the perfect cover for pedophiles. they join the church on purpose, first to give them access to boys, and second, nobody will question why they're not married.

Priest accused of molestation are removed from ministry in the Catholic Church.

In every population of human beings are going to a few sick or evil people who commit horrible crimes, even in the Church.

The percentage of pedophiles in the clergy of the Catholic Church is actually less than that of society in general.

These few terrible people do not negate the faith, hope and love of over one billion Catholics.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families report "Child Maltreatment 2006" states that sexual abuse by Catholic clergy was less than one-half of one percent of all cases.

The report states that the perpetrators relationship to the victim was:
29.1?ere Other Relatives
26.2?ere Parents
24.4?ere Others
6.9?ere Unknown or Missing People
6.1?ere Unmarried Partners of Parent
4.4?ere Friends or Neighbors
1.8?ere Child Daycare Providers
0.5?ere Other Professionals
0.3?ere Foster Parents
0.3?ere Residential Facility Staff
0.1?ere Legal Guardians

All clergy is a subset of Other Professionals and Catholic clergy is a subset of all clergy. http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/pubs/cm06/table3_19.htm

Most of what you said is true (though I'm not totally sure about the first), but there's another very important aspect. The Catholic church puts priests one a huge pedestal, they're supposedly these super wise and moral people with a special connection to God. But of course that's not true, they're just humans, and you can't give a bunch humans that kind of authority and expect none of them will abuse it. But--this is the worst part--the church had to maintain the illusion that it was true. And they easiest way yo do that was to systemically cover up for their priests when they did wrong.

Yes, you could say it is like, don't ask, don't tell.
Answered By: Josh3 - 3/6/2011
Under the Catholic Church's "teachings", you can just say "woops. my bad" in your head at anytime and anything wrong that you did is totally fine.

There has never been a pedophile in the Catholic Church it is all the work of Satan and his tools the Media.
Answered By: Ben A. Dick - 3/6/2011
Quite possibly. Although I think the bigger travesty is when it was revealed that in some cases the overseers of these priests knew what was going on and instead of dealing with the problem, covered it up and transferred the priests to new locations. That is sad and sinful.

You answered your own question. It was basically what I would have said.
Answered By: motivational_raven - 3/6/2011
Nice assumptions, too bad they fail when combated with fact. The VAST majority of pedophiles happen to be married, stepfathers as a matter of fact, then teachers, then nursery workers, some others, then about 1?re clergy, and about half of that catholic clergy (the other half are married). That is about the split in the US, so no, your assumptions fail.

Young Catholic men who have desires they know are evil are drawn to the seminary because they hope studying will divert their attention. And as Catholicism encourages anxiety about sex, sexuality is not addressed in the seminary. So when the young men get out, they are still pedophiles except now they are in a position of trust and authority. It is a disaster waiting to happen.

Same thing that makes major banking institutions a good place for crooks and robbers to hide, they're "too big to fail" so there is no accountability.
Answered By: chemical_willpower - 3/6/2011
The lack of sex does cause people to exploit others sexually. That is one of the reasons God gave us marriage - as an outlet for our sexual energies. Having that pent up sexual energy with no outlet makes one behave in funny ways. If you don't think so, then why do men behave differently before and after sex, as far as being horny and aggressive? The bible never instructed ministers to be celibate. That is a man-made restriction invented by the Catholic church which has only served to come back to haunt them. I guarantee that if priests were allowed to marry that pedophilia would virtually disappear. You hear of pedophilia is protestantism only very, very rarely.
Answered By: Jim - 3/6/2011
It's mainly because when these horrible crimes occur within the catholic church, they chose to cover it up rather than confront the issue head on.

Catholicism is desperatley behind the times and seriously needs to eneter the 21st Century.

Catholic? None of these pedophiles are Catholic - and most of them are married, so apparently marital status has nothing to do with it!

Celibacy, for 1 thing. Catholics more interested in the coffers, rather than the coffins they fill with abused children & adults & blind obedience to "someone else" telling you how to live as well as other people not wanting to do anything about it.
Answered By: Elizabeth - 3/6/2011
Jim is about right and that celibacy thing only became a reality
because of what else money, and yes it will keep haunting them
specially because the don't want to address it like it should.
Acknowledge the problem, clean house, get rid of REALLY
stupid doctrine, and make amends (not just believe in Jesus and
ask for forgiveness, newsflash it won't cut it) I've been telling the
really block headed so-called Christians this over and over, to no avail.
Faith... must be enforced by reason... when faith becomes blind it dies.

>>as well, i believe the fact that priests aren't allowed to marry makes it the perfect cover for pedophiles. they join the church on purpose, first to give them access to boys, and second, nobody will question why they're not married.<<

I'm not convinced. A "four-month effort by The New York Times to learn about the pedophiles’ online world by delving into their Internet communications" found that "The most frequent job mentioned...was schoolteacher" and that "Some pedophiles revealed that they gained access to children through their own families. Some discussed how they married to be close to the children from their wives’ previous marriages. Pedophiles who said they were fathers described moments involving their own children, such as a man who told of watching his sons change for swimming in a locker room, complete with details about the older boy’s genitals and emerging pubic hair. Others insisted they would never feel any interest in their own children, but commented on the benefits presented by parenthood.

"'I have a daughter and have never been attracted to her,' a man with the screen name of jonboy wrote. But, he added, 'I did find her friends very attractive.'"

Being a married teacher gives one far more access to children (and cover) than being an unmarried priest. A priest wouldn't have the opportunity or excuse to, say, bathe children; a father would.

This is the RELIGION & SPIRITUALITY SECTION! Of course we're going to give Bible quotes. It wouldn't be a RELIGION & SPIRITUALITY SECTION if we didn't give Bible quotes. It's, like, our job to give Bible quotes. If this bothers you, then why do you come on this particular section? You're a glutton for punishment and that's not our fault. We can't help you if you love to put yourself in misery. We have every right to give Bible quotes. It's how we Christians learn from each other.

So today I went in for an interview and I was going in for the 2nd interview by the head chief executive. now this is where it got weird, so she asked me about my previous jobs and said how much she liked that product over that product. then she started talking about her daughter? an her divorce ...then how she didn't finish college because she was making more money doing what she did for this company ... then she talked about how her teenage daughter is a handful... I just played it cool thinking she was using some sort of psychology thing to trick me into saying something stupid. the interview ended and she seemed happy an I was escorted to the door... now I'm freaking confused? is this normal behavior for an executive? like it felt like she was going to burst into tears at one point and tell me her life problems... is this normal? was she trying to see how I react or something?

Basically- no degree, although I have tried completing one in the past and stopped because of physical and mental health issues which were overwhelming to deal with along with going to classes full time. I'm not stupid and I am quite articulate. I am 23 and have only worked for about two years retail in high school and stopped working to go to university. I worked a few months in 2010 retail after I dropped out but it was only a seasonal position, and the only reason why I have not been able to constantly work is because of mental health issues. I had also tried going back to community college during my free time since i left university in 2008/9 and I had panic attacks while in community college, which made my anxiety worse from then on. Well recently I met a good doctor and he prescribed me some meds that are stabilizing my moods and I feel the best I've felt in years, and I'm ready to work. Thing is, I don't know how to get a job now since I've spent literally years being depressed and anxious doing nothing. I don't really have anything to put on my resume, and I never finished my AA degree either. All I've done is cashiering and although I do the job well and I get promoted easily when I do these jobs because I'm a hard worker and I try to go above and beyond what they ask of me,which is the attitude I have no matter what kind of work I'm doing as long as I'm getting paid. But I hate cashiering because it's too easy and I want a job that is more interesting. Any suggestions for me on how to get a job that is NOT Retail with the type of background I have right now? I also realize I have to go to college to get certain types of jobs, I am talking about what I can do right here right now.

Recently I have overlooked for a project at work and I am unable to accept it why? I am hard working, dedicated, maintain a very professional decorum, very cordial with my colleagues and bosses, give respect to one and all. Still people who take the p***, argue with managers, gossip mongers have been selected for some very responsible positions at work. I seriously can't get my head around it why, why unprofessional people who have no work ethics being selected over me, whereas I have a track record of excellent performance and never shy away from any work my manager ask me to do? I am at my lowest point and not getting hold of my manager to ask the question why not me, why them who can't even bother? I am feeling like a complete loser, giving years to this place, building my performance, trust and this is how I get rewarded. Why my life is so shit, anything I wish for turns to dust?

So I have a nice white button up shirt, business skirt and pants, and a suit jacket. I'm applying for a software development job and I'm very short and can look young so I'm trying to look adult, yet professional. I'm also attractive so I'm trying not to look too sexy. For the career fair I'm thinking of wearing just my nice shirt and a skirt with low heels. My reasoning being it's approachable and attractive without going overboard since the career fair hosts are mostly younger male recent grads. I want to be remembered but not intimidating. For my interviews I was thinking pants, suit jacket (power suit). My reasoning being it'll be older execs and HR people (mostly women) so less sexy with the pants but more powerful with the suit jacket. What do you think?!
