Do a lot of teachers get certificates in different subjects for more job security?

If you're an Art or Music Teacher, and they're talking about cutting your job. Do you get a certificate in Reading, or Special Ed so you won't be laid off, but just reapportioned.

It depends upon the state in which you live. In many states you must major or minor in a subject to teach it. Few people go back and get a second minor. The areas that will give you the most security are Math, Science and Special Ed. Good Luck!

If it's easy to add on endorsments, teachers will do that. It really depends on the state and what their policies are. If teachers have to go back to school for years, it may not be worth it. If adding an endorsment only takes a couple of classes, they might look into it.

Several teachers in my school district have done that. the University here encourages education majors to get endorsements in as many fields as possible while in school. It makes you more marketable.
