What does it mean that the government will shutdown?

Like, what exactly does this mean? Why would monuments and post offices close? I don't exactly understand.

Non-Essential government employees will be temporally laid off. Police, Fire departments and Military are considered Essential Services and are still on duty. Even Congress and the President who are actually causing the problem are still working and getting paid to screw up the budget... More

since theres no budget bill, federal employee wont go to work or get paid. all post office are government owned and people who work there wont get paid. dont worry they passed the bill

all things run by the government will lose all funding so they can't have any employees work so they will be shut down. However the post office wouldn't be shut down.

All Federal Parks closed, Internal Revenue Service Closed and our Soldiers would loose one week of pay. That was just a few of the many.
