What kind of salary is needed to live in a multi-million dollar home?

Up in the hills of my town there are homes that go for up to 4 million dollars and I know that out in Orange County there are homes that are even more expensive. I've always wondered what type of jobs do people need to do in order to afford these houses? What type of income would someone need to have?
