What events will show that America is recovering from this Recession?

I don't know very much about Economics, but I was wondering, for the ordinary observer, what could be said to be the signals that the economy is rapidly improving? I hesitate to attribute improvements in the unemployment numbers to the end of the Recession, because many people just accept whatever low-paid job they can find to keep body and soul together. Maybe the guy who had been making $35,000 a year is now making $15,000, but he's not unemployed. What should I be looking for?
