I know it's a lot but it's very, very important and I'm not fluent enough to do it myself. Please somebody. ______________________________________________________________ Hi. I want to reassure you about Marlena's cutting. I have many patients who do this, and compared to some others, Marlena's "cuts" are really scratches. It worries parents very much, because parents love their children and don't want to see them hurt, so why would they hurt themselves? You probably agree. Kids who do this consciously do it because it is like a mirror of the way they hurt inside, in their emotions, where it's hard to see or know what's real. The cuts or scratches are a symbol of this, which the person can see. And the physical pain of doing this matches and releases the feelings inside. I didn't tell you because I try to give privacy to them unless they are cutting for real, which she is not doing. If I don't, then they won't trust me or tell me things. If she cut for real, I would have told her that I have to tell you, and then told you. I know that you are worried about her. But it sounds as though your worry for Marlena comes out as anger at her, and this doesn't help her. She needs you to listen to things she is trying to tell you. She may tell you things that bother her, especially that she doesn't value herself very much (that beautiful, lovely, polite, smart young lady with the good work ethic!!! There's no more that a parent could wish for!). All parents of teens feel confused because teens are trying to take ownership of their own lives, and parents never know how much increasing freedom to give, and how much trust to give, even when kids find their own ways through life, different from what the parent wants to guide. I have 2 children, now 20 and 25, and it was and sometimes still is, scary for me. You are not alone, and you haven't done anything wrong, when you are unsure. This is everyone. But when parents try to force children to stay inside what parents are comfortable with, that force meets with counter force or rebellion...or in Marlena's case, taking her resentment out on herself, because she doesn't want to hurt you. Marlena needs you to just say when you worry about her but then to put your own worries aside when you're with her and ask her what SHE is feeling. Being a good listener, not doing anything about it, is what she needs. WHEN SHE IS TELLING YOU WHAT'S ON HER MIND, ALL SHE NEEDS IS FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND, NOT GIVE SOLUTIONS (which we parents don't have), UNLESS YOU HAVE SOME IDEAS FOR HER TO CONSIDER ON HER OWN. YOU CAN TELL HER ABOUT TIMES YOU'VE FELT THAT WAY. AND THEN BE GLAD THAT YOU'RE ABLE TO GET HER HELP. Kids know more than we think they know, and the job is really to remind Marlena of the strengths she has that can help her with her problems or worries. She is very strong, very able, willing to work toward goals, to figure out what she can do about problems by herself, and then ask for help when she needs it. That is a good idea for all of us to do, you and me included. If you don't have faith in Marlena, it's a bit harder to have faith in herself. Again, you don't have to do anything. Just ask what she needs and follow her lead. Be there for HER. This advice is very important. If you try to push her and get her to stop so that you don't have to worry, it makes her go in the wrong direction. I would use a translator but they're not very detailed and this is really important.
