Job suggestions: Plumber, HVAC, Electrical?

My husband is currently a superintendant with a commercial paint company. He basically oversees jobs. He only has a high school diploma. He has been painting for 8 years. He has always been the quickest person promoted within the company he has worked (was promoted from crewman to shop manager in 4 years with 1 company and promoted from crewman to site foreman at this new company). The thing is, he cant physically paint forever and his current job has him out of town more times than we prefer. He has been weighing options about going back to school to get a trade. HVAC Ive heard makes a good salary but isnt reliable with regard to hours (layoffs occur in the winter, etc). What about plumbing and eletrical employees? Do they have a lot of layoffs seasonally?? Any other ideas of work he might be able to do? He needs to earn a good living. $16/hr.+ w/ 40 hrs+ per week. Thats less than he earns now, but we can manage to keep him closer to home. We also need benefits (decent medical at a minimum). We live in the Carolinas.
